Daufuskie Endangered Places Program by the Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation

Daufuskie Endangered Places Program (DEPP), an initiative of The Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation to preserve the original Gullah built dwellings on Daufuskie Island, S.C., launched a fundraising campaign in March 2015 via GoFundMe to continue its work of restoring and preserving these historic Gullah dwellings while allowing campaign supporters nights on Daufuskie. DEPP represents an initiative where Palmetto Trust leases at risk homes from the Gullah families of the original owners, rehabilitates the homes in a manner that respects the historic integrity of the structure and then rents the home to travelers who want to experience the Gullah heritage, unique to South Carolina’s coast, and Daufuskie Island’s natural beauty. When the organization has recouped the costs it endured for renovations by renting the homes, the Gullah heirs, who have retained full ownership, are free to use the property as they wish.  Read More
